With 60% of our bodies made up of water, it is no mystery that water plays a very important part in our daily diet. Water is used by our bodies in all the cells, tissues and organs for temperature regulation and also to maintain other important bodily functions. Breathing, sweating and digestion use up a lot of water, so it becomes imperative to refuel our body by drinking water or consuming food that contains water. The amount of water required by a body depends on a number of things – the place you live in, the physical nature of your work etc. On an average, a minimum of 8-10 glasses of water are needed on a daily basis to maintain all bodily functions properly, which can even go up to 15 glasses depending on your body needs. A good way to check if you are getting enough water is by looking at the colour of your urine; if it’s clear, everything is in order. If it’s dark, it is time to chug some water. If your body is losing fluids due to any reason, it is vital that you up your fluid intake to restore body’s natural hydration levels.

Benefits of drinking healthy water –

  • Toxins get flushed out of the body
  • Provides relief for headaches and migraines
  • Keeps the tissues in our bodies moist
  • Protects the spinal cord
  • Acts as a lubricant and cushion for the joints
  • Prevents skin and eye dryness

What kind of water do you need to drink?

However, it is not enough to only drink water, one needs to also pay attention to what kind of water they are drinking. Let’s go back in time and remember what we studied in chemistry about pH (potential of hydrogen); it is a numeric scale that can be used to understand the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. The scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline. If the pH of any food/drink is greater than 7, it is considered alkaline.

For optimum bodily functions, the body needs to stay in a slightly alkaline state. An overtly acidic body might experience fatigue, reduced energy, digestive woes, weight gain and frequent colds and infections. An acidic body is more susceptible to serious diseases, even cancer. It is advisable to take note of the kind of food and beverages one eats daily as it can determine the overall pH level of the body. 1931 Nobel Prize winner Dr. Otto Warburg discovered that acidic environment of the body causes 95% of cancers and that an alkaline environment with a pH score of 7.36 or more is detrimental to cancer survival. It is highly likely that many of the modern diseases are due to acidic body state.

We are well aware that tap water is not the best water that we can consume. It is replete with chlorine, contaminants, metals and antibiotics. While boiling water for 30 minutes at 70 degrees Celsius kills all pathogens, there are many other harmful chemicals found in water that boiling cannot kill and are as a result, hazardous in nature. Some of these chemicals are fluoride, arsenic, lead, mercury, chlorine, perchlorate, PCBs, dioxins and DDT.

State of drinking water in our country

With 17.5% of the world’s population, India has access to only 4% of the world’s fresh water sources and even that is declining in quality and supply. Providing water daily to nearly 1.2 billion people is proving to be increasingly difficult as well. With surface water sources being mostly contaminated and groundwater sources getting depleted, pure and safe drinking water is at stake.

The water treatment plants in many places are not maintained properly and lacks hygiene. Storage tanks are not cleaned on a regular basis and often animals and birds contaminate the tanks with their waste. Several urbanized localities in India have high nitrate concentration which is detrimental to health. Toxic element discharge from industries and landfills have contributed to highly contaminated groundwater.

Additionally, due to improper planning of cities and urban areas in India, a number of water supply pipelines are constructed close to sewer lines underground, which doubles the chances of contamination. Consuming such water creates havoc in your systems leading to unhealthy, acidic environment that weakens the immune system.

Water contamination issues have compelled Indian consumers to use water purifiers at home. While different devices use a number of technologies, a single technology is not enough to guarantee clean drinking water.
